Indeed this does happen.  There is another possible outcome, though.  I 
heard a sobering tale from a Ham in Ft. Wayne, IN.  A real OT passed 
away, a fellow who had kept gear from the spark era on.  Out of respect 
my friend waited about three weeks to let them bury Grandpa and get past 
the inevitable shock of the situation.  When he showed up at their door 
to talk about the gear they told him it had all gone in the trash a week 
earlier.

Maybe the lesson to take from this is that we should make a list for our 
family telling which pieces are particularly valuable with a rough idea 
of what they are worth.  No, I have not done that either.
