Hi Mike, et al,
Roy & I agree, it sounds like it could well be mechanical, inside the
meter. Open it very carefully, inspect closely, with a magnifier & good
light, for particles of anything in there, particularly magnetic bits in
the poles, where the bobbin rotates. A little spec of steel wool, or some
such, can really make things miserable, and erratic. Also, IIRC, that
meter pot is also suspect, it's large, high wattage, 'cuz it carries plate
current of one stage (I think), and I believe I've had a problem with one
or more. Disconnect wiring, hook you ohmeter to it, and see if it's
smooth (and abt the right value). Similarly follow Roy's advice on the
meter.
