Scott,
I once (late 60s?) operated the HT44, 45 and SX117 combo at a museum
club station back in Detroit. I regret I don't recall much detail from
that weekend but the setup worked fine for whatever event we were
participating in.
One thing to check, and you will likely have talk to a HT45 owner, is to
see if a 3-500Z will physically fit in place of the 3-400Z. The 400's
are pretty expensive to find these days. Some amps designed for
3-400Z's using the recommended Eimac chimney may not take a 3-500Z as a
plug-and-play substitute. Electrically the tubes are a good enough
match if you can make it fit.
I don't see HT-45's at area hamfests very often, nor do I recall any
particular horror stories about them. I'd bet they are a decent 1kw
class amp that does its job well, and folks who have one tend to keep
it?
