[Hallicrafters] Question about Hallicrafters HT-45 Loudenboomer

Scott,

Some of this I think we discussed off line earlier but I do have and
regularly use a Hallicrafters HT-45 Loudenboomer Amplifier. I run it
with the orignal Hallicrafters P-45 Power Supply. (I even use 866A
rectifier tubes!)

I have had this setup (with the HT-44 and SX-117) for over 30 years and
it still works flawlessly. The HT-45 easily runs 600 watts output. I
think it would do more but I am careful with the old 3-400Z final
amplifier tube. It is the original tube supplied in this amplifier. The
HT-45 has pretty consistent output from 80-10 meters. For a brief time I
used the HT-45 with a solid state exciter that had no internal tuner
quite successfully. Since the amplifier has very low drive requirements,
there is an attenuator pad circuit described in the HT-45 manual that is
a "must" for running this amplifier with a 100 watt exciter. In reality,
however, the pad seems to provide a better load for the exciter as well.
You will recall that the older Hallicrafters SSB exciters (HT-32, HT-37,
HT-44, and maybe even the HT-30) were designed to work into 50-70 ohms.
They did not have the wide loading range of some of their competition of
the time.
