[Hallicrafters] RE: Question About Hallicrafters HT-46/SX-146

Scott,

Yes, I regularly use the Hallicrafters SX-117 and HT-44 (with an HT-45
Amplifier). They remain a wonderful radio to use with a very quiet receiver
and a desk presence that has not been with us for many years. I run mine
with Halllicrafters accessories including the HA-1 Keyer (wish I had the
HA-1A), the HA-8 Splatter Guard, and the HA-10 LF Preselector. I use the
Hallicrafters P-45 HV Power Supply for the HT-45 and the PS-150-120
Speaker/Power Supply to power the HT-44. I have recently started using an
external Hallicrafters R-48A Speaker instead of the internal one in the
PS-150-120 with good success.

They are wonderful radios. I run them mostly on 40 meters with some on 10
meters. Use of the amplifier is pretty rare. Maintenance is also rare but
there can be problems with the original capacitors in the balanced modulator
circuit. Also, the bearings on the transmitter and receiver main tuning
shafts benefit from some regular lubrication. In fact, many old units I have
seen have these bearings worn beyond hope and in need of replacement. I
believe that the bearings are pretty standard at industrial supply
distributors, however. (But, alas, maybe not by this day and age.)

I only lack a microphone like the one used in the 1964 advertising for this
station. I use an unamplified D-104 with good success. Also not in the
original advertising is my keying mechanism -- I use a Nye Viking unit. The
HT-44 still has the original finals, branded Hallicrafters. The original
3-400Z is still running full power in the HT-45. I am only the second owner
of the station -- and I have had it for 25 years. The units were, as far as
I can tell, all purchased at one time by the original owner from Henry Radio
in Butler, Missouri. (I have most of the original boxes as well.)

Subject: [Hallicrafters] RE: Question About Hallicrafters HT-46/SX-146

Yesturday I was asking about the HT-44 and matching SX-117 receiver. Today
I'd like to ask about the HT-46 and matching SX-146 reeiver. I'm thinking
they might have been the last tube transmitter/receiver made by
Hallicrafters. Is this so?

They are an interesting looking pair, almost looking more like a Novice
station than an SSB station.

Is anyone on the list currently running or has run that pair? What do you
think of it? Any FS?
