[Hallicrafters] Hallicrafters Speakers

Wayne,
My first receiver was a Hallicrafters SX-25. I still own it and several
'25s...sort of an "obsessive compulsive" thing I suppose.
Anyway, the 500/5000 ohm thing is not a big deal. In fact, for many
years I connected a standard 8 ohm speaker to whichever terminals that
sounded best and knew no difference. However the purist in me that has
developed with regard to my Hallicrafters collection now requires a bit more
attention to such detail.
I have found two excellent sources for impedance matching audio
transformers: Fair Radio in Lima, Ohio has sold me a couple that offer taps
that will match 500 or 5000 ohm outputs to 8 or even 4 ohms. I also have
found junked-out telephone equipment...particularly multiplexing or Centrex
or network phone system units to be a good source of 600 to 8 ohm audio
transformers. The R-390 used the same scheme so you can probably find a
matching transformer from anyone who sells R390 parts. I wouldn't get too
wrapped up about whether it is 500 or 600 ohms as I have yet to be able to
discern any difference in what I hear from my SX-25 receivers when using the
two impedances interchangeably.
Good luck!

I have a question that I hope that someone can help me with. I'm in the
process of restoring several Hallicrafters. What I'm wondering about is the
SX-25. It has two outputs of 500 and 5K Ohms for a speaker.
What would be the best type of audio transformer to use to convert from 500
or 5K to an 8 ohm speaker?
Thank you,
Wayne
