Don,
It's been awhile since I overhauled my SX-62 but here are some things I
remember:
Don't use orange drops. They're just too big. Use high-quality axial
lead caps.
You'll have to draw pictures of some of the wiring because you can't do
one-at-time replacements everywhere. Things are just too cramped. I
might have my old drawings if you need them.
A huge number of the resistors were out of spec, almost all of them.
Be prepared to replace a lot of resistors
Before you go crazy in the RF deck, try the radio. Those micas in
there are nearly impossible to access and in most cases still OK.
There are some funny paper caps with braided leads. I got an
explanation of those caps from a real expert. I've forgotten the
explanation but I do remember the advice. Unless you're pretty sure
they are leaky, leave them. There are only a couple of these. I got
this advice after I replaced mine and my radio works so there you go.
Some of the alignment slugs are sealed in wax. There has been a lot of
discussion about how to get the wax out and back in without damaging
things. But lo and behold, those slugs are right on the money 99
44/100% of the time so the best thing to do with these adjustments is
leave them alone unless the radio won't play.
The tone control caps tend to short and take out the audio output
transformer. Don't neglect these even though this might seem a
relatively less important part of the radio.
Be really careful cleaning that monster band switch. There have been
reports of swelling from spraying in cleaner -- a real nightmare. Some
have been lucky but some have been unlucky. I would recommend a pen
dispenser, not a spray can for doing this.
If your slide rule dial is damaged, someone makes replacements. Excuse
me for forgetting his name.
Many radios have moved from the bench to the operating position and
back to the shelf or out the door in my shack. But the SX-62 isn't
going anywhere. I love this radio. I hope you like yours too.
