Jon,
Thanks for all the advice and suggestions on the capacitance question. I chose to wait, get the correct values, and make a permanent replacement. After changing the 1uf 100v cap (in the agc circuit) and the power supply filter caps the bc348Q is back to life - sort of. Still needs a thorough going over but it is at least showing positive signs of life again. Thanks again to all who reponded to my question. Have a great weekend and . . .

Best 73!

At that value, I am presuming the original was perhaps in a cathode circuit
of an audio section, or perhaps the AVC circuit. With a 50 times increase in
value you certainly are going to drastically change the time constant of the
original circuit.

Now if it only involved a higher voltage rating, no problem, but that great
of a change in capacitance is certainly going to upset something.

Al, K0AL

> Does anybody know of any reason (other than overkill) that it wouldn't be
acceptable to use a 50uf 500v electrolytic cap where a 1uf 100v was called
for? The reason I ask is that I am doing some troubleshooting on a bc-348-Q
and only have the higher valued cap in my junkbox. I intend to order the
correct capacitors but for now . . . ?
