[Hallicrafters] S40 B alignment with limited equipment

Probably one of the best pieces of test equipment which can be found on
the internet right now, is the AN/URM-25 series of signal generators.
These
generators (Military) are very accurate and will go down to 10khz which,
is
below the Hallicrafters IF's of 50khz. I just got one and it is a
fantastic
piece of equipment for aligning these great receivers. As to measuring
the
output of the receiver, a simple AC voltmeter connected to the speaker
leads
will perform that job. I use the old reliable Simpson 260 series of
VOM's.

Paul,
As pointed out previously, you need some kind of signal to align a
receiver.
It can be off the air, a crystal calibrator, signal generator, noise
generator or anything that will input a signal into the receiver.
You also need a method of measuring the output from the radio, although
sometimes, just listening to the speaker will be enough.
A signal generator is a handy piece of test equipment to have around.
You
should be able to scare up an old Heath or Eico unit for very little
money.
Yes, TV alignment tools should work.
