I have a Mark 2 that has the same gold inserts.
Previously, I had another that only had the calibrator knob fully gold but
the other three had traces. Unfortunately, I cleaned them off so they were
all nice aluminum. Then the next Mark 2 arrived. The uniformity of the
coating and the fact that it flakes off (on the first that I cleaned) leads
me to believe that it is normal for some units. The radio with the four
gold knobs has the black tapered knobs similar to the gray tapered knobs on
the S-38E.
Cheers

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-100 items.
Three items:
I just received a new project - a SX-100 and have a question and a
request. The end caps in the four small knobs (Notch freq. and depth,
Antenna tune, and Calib.) are all gold (or brass) colored. Is this
correct? The end caps in all of the other knobs are silver colored.
Also I need an audio transformer for the SX-100 (numbers on top are
055-200264 and 606133), does anyone have one they will sell?
A couple of days ago I visited the American Museum of Radio in
Bellingham, Washington. It is a world-class museum of early radio
including communication receivers. The web address is
<www.americanradiomuseum.org>. If anyone is in the NW, I recommend a
visit.
And finally, my project SX-28 is 15% done and plays very good. A
hard receiver to work on but a great one. Thanks to those who have
helped me on it.
