One aspect of the part-out/restore question nobody has mentioned is the
limitation of the weakest link. For many Halli rigs that is the dial
lock with knobs probably coming in second. How many original, working
SX-42 dial locks are out there? That imposes a limit on the number of
fully original, complete SX-42's that can exist. SX-28's suffer the
dial lock issue, too, though with 50,000 built it is not as hard to find
one. Knobs are notorious for being easily trashed, but there are lots
of knobs out there, too. All you need is somebody who is willing to
part out a set to supply them to you.
In a free society you can do whatever you want with your radio. That is
small consolation when I see somebody hack a pristine linear and turn it
into a six meter amp or part out a complete, working receiver, but
that's just the way it goes. There is little I can do about it so I
just remind myself that it makes my stuff a bit more valuable.
