You are correct!  The SX-104 had a switch selectable user supplied
crystal for fixed frequency operation.  But, it still had or could have
had a 
crystal.  Hence the "X" designation.

I don't believe the SX-104 has any kind of a crystal. The user can
install his own crystal if he wants fixed frequency operation rather
than
tuneable. The radio does not come with a crystal.
