[Hallicrafters] Panel lettering

I have used the dry transfer lettering to completely redo an HT-32 bezel
panel. The first thing I did was measure the letter height. 1/8" if I
remember. 2nd thing I did was measure the beginning and end of each word
in relation to a common measuring point. I believe I used the bottom
edge
of the bezel. I then took good digital images of the lettering for
reference. Then I ordered the dry lettering "Ham and CB etc" package.
The lettering is 1/8" high!

I then sandblasted the entire bezel to bare metal and repainted it in
flat
black. Then, I carefully placed blue masking tape at the proper
locations to keep the lettering straight using my previous measurements.

Basically, the blue masking tape was my straight edge, keeping the
transferred letters straight. Blue masking tape does not leave a
residue. The lettering came out beautifully and then I clear lacquered
the panel to protect the lettering. While this final step (clear
lacquer) is certainly not original, it is as close to original as I
could hope for and protects the letters. If you would like some very
good images of my bezel in the process, let me know by emailing to

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Panel lettering

I've seen reference to decals and the "rub off" lettering in reference
to redoing the panels. I have used both in building instrument panels,
but isn't the original lettering silk screened onto the panels or did
they use various methods? Either the decals, or rub off lettering are
certainly easier than the silk screen process, but how do you make them
look original?
