[Hallicrafters] Panel lettering

I've seen reference to decals and the "rub off" lettering in reference 
to redoing the panels.  I have used both in building instrument panels, 
but isn't the original lettering silk screened onto the panels or did 
they use various methods?  Either the decals, or rub off lettering are 
certainly easier than the silk screen process, but how do you make them 
look original?
