I operated on 11 meter AM and made several duplex cross-band contacts with
Australia and New Zealand doing that. Used an NC-125 (sorry no
Hallicrafters) receiver and DX-100 transmitter.
It was a lot of fun being able to talk like it was a telephone conversation.

Anyone licensed at that time (I was licensed in 1956) well remembers that
for all intent and purpose, 11 meters was a worthless band for
communications. The reason was that medical diathermy machines worked on
those frequencies and virtually blanked the entire band. I don't remember
any hams making a big to-do about giving the band to CBers as I don't recall
any ham operating on 11 meters. These machines were used for producing heat
deep in muscle tissue. As the use for these units decreased and other
devices developed to do the same thing came into being, the band cleared up
and eventually became a very "Clean" band to operate from. WHO NEW??
