Hi, Skip--
Maybe I'm missing the rationale for using a tube - to hide the
crystal? There are (or once were) crystals sealed in a glass tubular
envelope, just saw an ad for one in a 1954 QST. There are also other items
you could start with, that use an octal plug. Relays come to mind, as well
as (I believe All Electronics might have some) octal modules - a small
aluminum or polycarbonate (clear - like the P&B relay) box built on top of
an octal plug; sounds like just the ticket! If you want to put it in a
tube base, I'd skip the delicate (especially once breached) glass part. Of
course, the old crystal-ovens were often octal-based, but that's yet
another story.
