Hi Waldo,
It may be a lot easier than most think.
IF you have some old (as in no longer good) Octal base tubes put on a pair
of strong leather gloves (for the just-in-case) and then grip the envelope
in one hand and the tube base in the other. Gently try to twist the envelope
in the base. You can actually twist quite hard if you don't grip too
tightly.
If that doesn't work, just put them in hot, soapy water and keep the bases
submerged as they cool. Then try to twist out the envelopes. You might
have to go back to hot water, but it's been my experience that many will
come out with very little effort even without the hot water treatment. Of
course a lot of them will not budge barring an act of God, dynamite, or a
hammer.
OTOH I've had them come loose just trying to remove what had been a good
tube from the socket.
