I'm giving my SX-99 MK 1D the old smoke test after spending about 30+ hours
restoring it and a companion R-46B, and so far so good... The radio really
doesn't appear to have been used much as all of the original Hallicrafter tubes
are still quite good, put I did find something that may have been an irritant
to the former user.
I found the 10 uf cathode bypass capacitor of V6 (audio output) unsoldered.
In fact, it was loosely stuck through the tube ground eyelet, and it doesn't
look as if the neg lead was ever clipped. Yup, it's the original cap!
I have a tendency not to turn on any newly acquired radios prior to cap
replacement and resistance checks, so I don't know how this factory oversight made
the radio perform. But, I imagine the volume would go up and down if the
radio was lightly touched. Don't know.
The radio is sensitive enough, and the pitch and crystal phasing appear to
operate as expected, so I'm not going to try an alignment. I'll just add a few
more burn-in hours on it before I place it in the cabinet.
Keep'em glowing!

Joe ( WJ5MH )
