When I was young and pursuing radio interests in Atlanta I used to ride
the bus downtown and visit the Lafayette, Allied, Olson, and Ack
Radio(which BTW is still in business in Atlanta and Birmingham) stores.
Not being too astute a bus rider and also not having much
money, I would take the bus in to 5 points and walk to all four stores.
Ack is about 4.5 miles by foot from 5 pts, so that was a 9 mile hike
around Atlanta on Saturday :-)
Anyway, I got my license at the FCC field office in Atlanta around age 15
and with all this walking around I got to noticing things like women. Well
one Saturday, 15 year old Bob is in town with one of his buddies and we
pass by the Domino Lounge. My buddy Mark, whos always bragging about his
exploits says, 'let's see if we can get in'. While Marks trying to bluff
his way past the bouncer, this lovely redhead comes to the door, says
hello aqs sweetly as any lady could, take my hand, and eads me into the
Domino. Remember, this was 1968 and the 'legal age; was still 18 so it
wasn't THAT bid a deal. In any case, the place was empty so we sat down
and she bought me a drink (vodka gimlet) and we chatted for about an hour
until some people came in. Found my friend Mark outside sharing a smoke
with the bouncer and still trying to talk his way inside...
Back to Radio shack. I started working at the downtown Atlanta RS that
winter. Believe it was 16 Peachtree. My favorite customer was a fellow who
went by the name, "Feel Good Bailey" and his method of determining quality
was to buy the heaviest example of whatever it was he wanted. "If it's
heavy, it's good" was Feel Good's motto and back then, the correlation was
pretty good. Feel good went a good 350-400lb and drove a big LIncoln or
Cadillac, depending on his mood.
I'll relate more later, have to head to the SARs swap meet.
73,
-Bob
