[Hallicrafters] SX 117 & Ht 44

I just got these and the rec. seems to be deaf? Apparently out of alignment but haven't checked that. The signals seem attenuated and I have to turn the volume up quite high and hear a hum in the background. 

I have since made the cables to transcieve. My question is, The lengths of the cables are critcal to the operation of them together? I have since cut the RG 62AU cables to exactly 28 in. and the Contol lines to 29 in.
