This discussion reminds me of a similar situation. I have an S-27 with a
squelch control added on the upper left of panel. Very professional
installation. Wiring is period and cabled into (not over) original wiring
harness. I thought somebody went to a lot of work.
Well, I had it at a swap meet last year and an OLD timer walked up and
started playing with it. He then told me that the FCC had ordered 100 of
them special built for monitor receivers with the squelch built in so they
did not have several radios setting around hissing like a pit of snakes all
the time. Made monitoring more tolerable. Come to find out he was retired
from the FCC and had a lot of interesting stories to tell. Wish I had had a
tape recorder with me. Have tried to talk to him several times since but
seems like the only time he is comfortable reminiscing is when he has a knob
in his hand.
