Bob:
I have done a lot of radios but never anything like you propose. I would be
very leery of doing something like this unless absolutely necessary. Can't
you blow in some electrical cleaning solvent or tuner cleaner from an
aerosol can to clean the variable cap? Before doing this grommet
replacement, if necessary, could you replace the old one using a new one
(grommet) by cutting the new one on one side and then pushing it in place
without removing the variable caps? Then maybe some black silicon rubber
over the splice? I don't think there would be a lot of wear and tear or
movement on the new cut part for it to ever fall out by making the repair
this way. If nothing else, it would save you a lot of time and accomplish
the goal. This type repair would hardly be noticed.
