About the brass inserts.  I took ideas available on this site:

and have managed to create some molded knobs that have a small Radio
Shack knob (with existing metal insert and setscrew) as a core component
in the molding.  All that is then required is to drill an access hold
through the newly molded outer knob to the existing inner knob setscrew.
Wax in the inner knob setscrew hole prevents the casting material from
plugging it up as the resin cures.

The results aren't bad, although I still plan to experiment with the RTV
molds and different casting materials a bit more this summer if time
allows.
