Actually, the FPM-200, which was completely solid state, came out in the 
early 60's.  If memory serves me correctly, it was Hallicrafters most expensive 
rig at the time, and as rare if not rarer than the fabled SX-88.  I had the 
opportunity to pick one of these up at an ARRL National Convention swap meet for 
$100, and, of course, passed it up.

As to Drake, they survived albeit not in the ham market.  Too bad, they made 
great gear.
