Over the years, I've owned two FPM-300's.

Nice effort on Hallicrafter's part to stay in the ham business, but it just
didn't compete with the Japanese rigs of the era. It was almost identical in
concept with the Kenwood TS520, solid state except for the finals and 115vac
and 12 vdc powered.

Quality and design were just OK. There is a series of mod's out for the
FPM-300 that is circulating that fixes most of the ills (I don't have a copy
anymore, gave mine away when I sold my last FPM-300).

Interestingly, Drake also tried to compete with a similarly designed rig,
designated the TR5 (not to be confused with the all solid state TR5 they released
several years later) that never got beyond the prototype stage. The Drake
prototype can be seen on the Drake Virtual Museum website.
