I had this same problem a few years ago.

I swapped the crystal associated with the USB circuit from my SX-111 and
used in in the 101A, and the problem disappeared.    I think what happened
was that the original crystal was going out of tolerance, and prevented the
oscillator from working (don't have the schematics handy, so can't remember
the correct name for the stage).  Alternately, the crystal could've been
right on tolerance, but one of the components in the USB circuit was out of
tolerance just enough to not work with the original crystal.
