I agree with Bill. I owned an R-48A years ago and the grill was clean. Fred,
is there any chance it is just one of those equipment hole plugs you can buy
at the hardware store to cover a hole that was once drilled?

Actually, I think I spoke too soon.  The small Hallicrafters logo is not
on the grill.  It is on the flat piece of metal running left to right
just below the grill.

Nothing should be on the lower right side of the grill.  The grill is
clean
Top to bottom, left to right.

I just purchased a R48A speaker in very nice condition. It has one
peculiar
thing on it and that is a silver button on the right side of the grill.
Upon
examining the rear grill it looks as though it was factory installed. I
am
not sure what it's function is. Any ideas? If needed I can send a
photo.
