[Hallicrafters] A great receiving antenna!

This is not a paid endorsement (silly me).

For some time, I've wanted to string up a dedicated receiving antenna for my Hammarlund SP-600, HQ-170 and various Hallicrafters sets.

As much as I'd like a big aerial, I live in Suburbia and so have limited real estate. A Beverage, for instance, is something you'll find in my refrigerator, not my backyard.

However, I've just acquired a terrific receiving antenna that is just 45 feet long and works fantastically. It's the PAR Electronics EF-SWL., made by Dale Parfitt, W4OP.

As the name implies, it's an end-fed antenna with a 9:1 balun at the coax end. It can be rigged horizontally, as a sloper or vertically (or anything in-between). It does require a good ground at the feed end for best noise-reduction results, but even ungrounded it works as well or better from .54 to 30 MHz than my dipoles do at their resonant frequencies. With a ground rod attached to the coax end, it's considerably quieter than the dipoles.

Though the EF-SWL is a receive-only antenna, Dale also makes monoband transmitting models for the ham bands, too (200W max power).

His website seems to be down today, but it's usually at http://www.rf-filters.com/ . You can order Dale's antennas directly from him with quick delivery (2 days in my case with minimal shipping charge) or from vendors such as Universal Radio in Ohio.

I can't wait to get home tonight to listen to my new, QUIET, Super-Pro!

73,
Craig
