I get my paint computer matched at a local
Sherwin-Williams paint store. The cost of a quart of
acryllic paint runs under $11 at my store. The
"satin" finish comes out "darn" close to the original
on all of the "boat anchors" that I have repainted.
You will need a paint gun unless your local store
happens to be one of those that can load spray cans.
Of course spray cans add to the cost.
Just take the cabinets down to the store and they will
do the rest. So far, I haven't needed to match the
S-85 / SX-99 color. But, on a number of other cabinet
colors including the Collins St. James gray the
matching has been "right on".
Acryllic paint is much harder than the normal enamel,
costs less than $1 a quart more, and still cleans up
with water!
There is a good chance that the S-Meter just has some
dirt or other substance caught in the coil. Pull the
plastic cover and use an "ear syrnge" or something
similar to carefully blow air into that area.
I use rubber cement to repair tears in speakers.
Works great! If a small piece of material is missing,
I have used "Big Chief" table material along with
rubber cement to make the repair. Looks kinda
"goofy", but the speaker usually reproduces sound fine
and the repair is hidden by the grill cloth.
If you are going to strip the speaker cabinet (which
you really should do when repairing a hole), then what
I usually do with a fairly small hole is to fill the
hole in with molten solder. Put several layers of
masking tape under the hole (on the bottom side of the
metal) or put a piece of wood, etc., on the bottom,
use soldering paste (rub some about 1/2 inch around
the hole), and use a propane torch to heat the metal.
When it is hot enough you can flow the solder into the
hole. make sure that you put a little "mound" on the
top side.
After the solder cools, file it off and use sandpaper
to get the metal "flat" with the surface. Prime and
paint as normal. This "fix" is a lot better than
using "Bondo".

1) Paint for the cabinets of the SX-99 and R-46B.
These cabinets appear to be two different shads of
gray with one being metallic (R-46B) and the other
being almost charcoal.
3) Replacement S Meter or someone that does meter
repair. The S-Meter meter movement is not smooth. It
seems to be stuck when you hold it in normal view by
moves freely when you hold the face towards the
ground.
4) Speaker repair. The R-46B speaker appears to be
original, but it has a 3/4 inch tear in the speaker
material and I would like to repair it before it grows
in size.
5) Some one drilled a hole in the speaker cabinet and
it will need to repaired. Does anyone have any
suggestions on how I could possibly repair the hole.
It is the size of a pea.
