Thanks to all! I got three responses to this. Two
say it's normal. One says not normal. I'll reply to
the last one in as if to all of them.
I was not aware that the crystal filter was only for
CW. I can see how, designed for CW, the filter might
be too sharp to pass a good audio bandwidth on AM.
I'm just not familiar with what that would do to the
character of the audio. I'm getting from two response
that ringing is a normal result of too-sharp
filtering.
To clarify what I was attempting, I was trying to use
the crystal filter to separate some SSB signals
received on 40 meters using the BFO pitch control in
CW mode, with reduced RF gain (AVC off). The ringing
was present, but the audio was still readable. The
crystal phasing control did reduce the ringing, but
also reduced the amplitude of the sound.
Is there a better way to get improved selectivity on
voice? Maybe an outboard Q-multiplier? Add-on
product detector? Better radio??
Thanks for the help!
