[Hallicrafters] SX-110 sideband reception

The receiver will receive SSB by using the BFO.
Using the older receivers without a product detector to receive sideband
did not result in great performance. The idea is to learn the BFO set
points for LSB and USB, first of all. When I used to use it, first, I
would tune with the BFO off first, till the signal was strongest. Then
turn the AVC off (it probably goes off anyway when you select CW) and
reduce the RF gain (or Sensitivity control) to avoid overloading.
Position the BFO in the center of its operation. Then slowly rotate
the BFO control to either side of that until the speech becomes
intelligible. On the lower frequencies, 75, 160 and 40 meters, lower
sideband is used, while on all other frequencies upper sideband is used.
So the BFO should tune to one side for LSB and to the other side of its
center point for USB. It is necessary to use the RF - to 'ride the
gain ' - gain control as a 'volume' control (after setting the AF gain
to a comfortable level.)
Most of the older receivers were not sufficiently stable enough to
handle sideband without the need for frequent retuning. A lot of that
can be accomplished with the BFO control but as the receiver wanders a
bit more, return the BFO to its initial best setting and retune the dial
slightly. I have successfully operated sideband with several of the
older receivers that did not have product detectors, over the years, but
it does take practice!
Good luck and have fun with the radio!
