I didn't use the S-53A, but my Novice and early
General receiver was the Hallicrafters S-107 which is
just a "reboxed" S-53A.

Didn't know that it wasn't supposed to work very well!
Made about 1000 QSOs on 40 and 15 meters back in
1959. This was using a WRL Globe Chief 90A for a
transmitter. Even worked KC4USB on 15 CW with the
rig. That was my best DX. A local W9 just happened
to be one of their QSL managers and when I finished
working the KC4 (Marie Byrd Land) he telephoned me and
said that my QSL card was waiting. Got on my bicycle
and within 10 minutes had the card in hand! Probably
not "the" record for getting a QSL from a DX station,
but pretty close!

The HT-18 puts out about 5 watts if I remember
correctly. Should work fine.

Does anyone have experience using the S53 as a ham receiver?
