The 600 volt and higher original capacitors were
nothing more than 2, or more, capacitors in series but
contained within the same sleeve thus "appearing" as
single capacitor. Unless, of course, the original
capacitors were oil filled and those often had a much
higher voltage rating. However, the capacitance value
of an oil filled capacitor is normally a lot less for
the physical size.
If someone wants to keep the same "look", they can
always remove the sleeve and install the new
capacitors inside. There is usually plenty of room to
spare.
