Well.... the easiest and possibly the best way to change the output would be
to use a 600 Ohm to 4/8 Ohm audio transformer.  The "best" one I've used
(sounds great) and the one most often recommended by the wags on the R-390
list was made especially by Hammond at the urging of the Collins Collectors
Assn and is available from Antique Radio Supply as the part number  P-T119DA
for $16.49 USD.  If your audio output is 500 Ohms... I doubt that either you
or the radio will notice the 600 Ohm transformers slight mismatch.

You don't need to alter your radio.... just hook the transformer to your
audio output and the speakers to the transformer.  You can put it in/on a
small box, attach it to the rear of your radio with existing screws or just
set it on the table behind your receiver.
