[Hallicrafters] RE:SX-101mkIII

Got a problem with my sx -101, and I really hate to pull it apart again due 
to the weight.
On ssb only, I will have nice receive for about 10-20 minutes, then it 
becomes scratchy, and then drops out all together.
Am reception remains fine.

I can wait awhile on am mode, then switch back to ssb, and it will be ok for 
awhile, but then again becomes scratchy and drops out.
Thinking it's the bfo, and I have swapped a few tubes.
Previously thought it may be the audio output trans., but since am mode seems 
fine, I sorta ruled that out.

Any quick remedies?
