Pete,

Welcome.

No, it is not the list policy. It is the unwillingness of some who subscribe to
share that is the problem. When a reply is sent back to the 'sender', it does
not appear on this list. However, the respondent can also send it back to the
list, as well as a copy to the sender, by using the 'reply to all' option in
their mail client.

When a reply is made in private, it never goes into the list archives. These are
retained for about thirty months and can be searched for information through
qth.net or from the HCI (Hallicrafters Collectors International) web site. When
private replies are used, and the question being answered is of general
interest, it deprives the list subscribers of potentially helpful information.

I have requested on numerous occasions that this practice be not done, and
explained why. Every time the list is set to automatically 'reply to all', a
handful of the almost six hundred subscribers whine, grumble and complain.
Several of them who complain do post replies to the list, the others seldom ever
contribute anything but complaints.

The purpose of this list, and all qth.net lists for that matter, is the sharing
of information. It can not be shared when some subscribers simply refuse to do
so and reply in private. These lists tend to become a living entity and take on
a personality of their own. Hence, some 'family' members (subscribers) tend to
clash with others and some get spiteful and continue to reply to questions of
general interest in private. Now I realize that under the best of circumstances,
and the best of humanity, friction is unavoidable. However, whether one party
likes another or not should not cause them to deprive this list of useful
information. They can dislike each other off the list -

Once again, I am asking EACH of you to share the helpful information with ALL
the list subscribers. Those questions of a personal nature, such as; someone who
needs an e-mail address of a radio friend they can't seem to contact, a Ham who
needs help with an old call sign he/she needs somebody to look up in an old ARRL
call book etc., can be sent in private. But if the question has general
interest, then please post the reply to the list.

If it does not go to the list, it does not go to the archives and is not
available to others who may need it.

Those of you who do receive personal replies can also post them back to the list
for all to see. Quite easy to do with a little cut/paste and minimal time and
energy.

There are several who check into the HCI 20 and 40 meter Nets weekly using the
SR-500. Most notably KB3EPJ from Maryland. Rick is a faithful check in and
always willing to share with others any information he may know or have access
to. It will also give you an excellent opportunity to hear a fine SR-500 in
operation.

Hello to all.
I recently joined this list.
I have purchased a SR-500 Transceiver. Looking forward to some traffic
on this list.
So far I have noticed questions being asked and then a
thank you response from the person asking the question, all the
correspondence seems to be done privately which does not provide any
information to the rest of the people on the list. Perhaps this is the
policy enforced here to keep the traffic down on the list server.

Any comments about the SR 500? I am new to Hallicrafters.

-Pete
