Hi Guys,
Not having the boatanchor experience of many of you folks, I still have
gleaned the idea that replacement of paper caps is due to their breakdown
from old age (drying out). Even if you COULD get paper caps, nowadays,
nobody in their right mind would install them as replacements. Unless, of
course, you merely wanted a radio that LOOKED original and didn't care if it
really worked.
The installation of "better quality" caps will, of course affect some of the
circuit's RLC factors. That is sometimes the price we pay for progress.
Kinda like replacing your car's R-12 refrigerant with R-134. It may require
additional work on your AC but, there really isn't any other option.

> I read something of interest recently on Electric Radio. It concerns us
changing the paper caps out on 50Kc if Hallicrafters Radios (SX-100, 101,
111, etc) with the newer plastic ones we see in various places like Antique
ES.
> FYI, the old paper caps were described in the article as being more of an
RLC combo rather than just a plain old cap and the engineers literally had
to incorporated those characteristics into the receiver. The newer caps were
far closer to an ideal C than the older stuff so say a .01uF cap in the old
days would have some inductance and resistance inherent in it's design while
the new mylar caps would be closer to the .01uF without any significant L or
R. Apparently, changing out to the new caps can have a negative effect on
those aforementioned rx's. Anyone care to comment on this? Thanks. Cal,
