Glen:
I feel that I must "tailgate" this story with one of my own!
Probably 15 years ago my wife and I got in the Ford van to go "Rover" for
the spring VHF contest. I had quite an elaborate 6M (yes) system in the
van, running 375 watts.
During the course of the day we stopped at a bar, out in the middle of
nowhere, out in the middle of Montana. My wife went in to get softdrinks
(honest).
I stayed in the van and began to call "CQ", with no results, so I continued
to call.
Moments later, my wife came rushing out of the bar, jumped into the van, and
yelled "get out of here!".
Well, it was a Saturday afternoon, and the bar was full of people, many of
whom were playing the electronic gambling machines. As soon as she had
entered the bar, she heard the familiar (though completely garbled) "CQ" I
was calling coming through on the gambling machine's audio system.
Only a moment later, the machines started the bells, whistles and siren
sounds they make when in pay-off mode. Patrons were yelling "I just won a
thousand dollars", "I just won five hundred dollars". and on and on. She
said it seemed as if every machine in the place was in pay-off mode. So,
she rushed out with our Cokes before anyone (especially the bartender) put
two and two together and made a connection between the strange sounds (me)
and the payoffs!
We rushed away, of course. I no longer do 6M mobile. But, I've often
wondered if there was a positive connection between the pay-offs and my
interference, and, if so, why I couldn't have made the rounds of bars, with
a cohort or two, and made the situation into a money-maker.
I think so slowly sometimes.
