Yes, the thing is prettey deaf on the upper frequencies.

Substitute a different for the mixer or RF amplifier then do an alignment. 
Sorry, I can't find the notes I have on that substitution but it is 
something like using a 6SR7 for a 6SK7 or a 6SH7 for a 6SA7 or some 
such.  The tube you are looking for is moderately uncommon but apparently 
works much better than the one normally used.  Other list members may have 
the info.

In any case, the following should all be done:
1) replace all, repeat all, paper capacitors in the radio
2) replace all resistors that have drifted high in value
3) do a complete alignment
4) do the alignment again
