Be sure to read Brian, NI6Q's, recent article in Electric Radio --
"Hallicrafters Receivers and Black Beauties: Beware!" Electric Radio, April 2003, page
29. Let me quote a little:
"The old condensers certainly have very different characteristics than
the new state-of-the-art polyester film or polypropylene capacitors that will
replace them ... the engineers designing our boat anchors in the 50s were
integrating these old capacitor imperfections in their calculations ... [A] complex
problem arises when dealing with Hallicrafter IF stages where variable
selctivity is obtained by switching different values of resistance and capacitance
coupling with the selectivity control of the 50 KHz IF stages..."
Brian goes on to give advice on which to replace and with to leave well
enough alone.
As for which caps to use, orange drops are sometimes just too big. In
crowded receivers like the SX 42 and SX 62 you're much better off with smaller
poly caps.
