Ed,
Yes, not uncommon. In the balanced modulator circuit there are four 0.01uF capacitors that seem to go bad. They are tube shaped and silver in color. You can't miss them in the radio or on the schematic (which I do not have with me right now). I temporarily solved the problem with my particular HT-44 by redressing those four capacitors outward from the sockets. Later, however, the problem returned. At that time, I replaced the capacitors with some simple Radio Shack mylar 0.01uF units 100% success.
