Ed,
While not an HT-44, I HAD the same excursions with my HT32A. Upon
an indepth troubleshooting session, I founf it to indeed be the RF level
potentiometer. While I didn't replace it, I was able to take the back
cover off an clean it adequately. For some of these pots DeOxit is the
thing - BUT - some of the Hallicrafters pots use a different system
whereas an inner metal ring is pressed on by a rotatable wiper pressing
it against the actual resistance material. DO NOT use DeOxit on these
pots. Either use straight alcohol, or a color tuner cleaner.
