I see your point, I stand corrected.  I following your chain of thought, my 
S-38E was far advanced because, unlike my new Icom IC-706MKIIG, the 
attenuation was designed into the front end.  My Icom radio needs to have 
the ATT button pushed, the S-38E was automatically designed to switch in 
attenuation permanently.
