[Hallicrafters] Frame of reference

Hi Tim,

My advice would be to use a better speaker on the SX-100 than the R-46. I
have the R-46 with the SX-100MkII. It sounds MUCH better with an efficient
old HI-FI speaker system. I use an old Heathkit with a horn tweeter and an
8" woofer in a bass reflex enclosure. (got it for $20 on the Ebay). With the
receiver selectivity set to 5Khz (nice and wide) and a station with good
audio it is absolutely amazing. There are receivers with better audio
sections than the SX-100 such as the SX-28 and the SX-62 (I have an SX-62A),
but the SX-100 will still sound really nice. I use a Drake R-4C for normal
use, but even with the wide xtal filter it is too narrow for good AM.

Some of the guys on 75 AM have audio that will put most broadcasters to
shame!

When I hooked up the better speaker to any of my receivers that have
sufficient bandwidth, I almost fell out of my chair!

Mark W1MJG

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Frame of reference

Hi folks -
I'm trying to get a "fram of reference " for how some of these
Hallicrafters I am reading about will sound. At the moment I only have a
little S-53A and a copy of Chuck Dachis really super book. I've never heard
any other Hallicrafters.
I notice for example that ebay has a nice looking SX-100Mk1A listed. The
only SWL receiver I have listened a lot to is a modern day Drake R8B. Could
some tell me how something like the SX-100 with an R-46 speaker might sound
compared to something like the Drake....mainly on AM SWL stations? Would it
be a far inferior sound or better? I don't have a clue...and, as I say need
a frame of reference. Thanks for putting up with the questions!
