Tim,
In the good old days of octal tubes, you were really pushing it to receive much above 18MHz. The
15meter band was not even allocated in those days. Hallicrafters was one of the few manufacturers
to cover the VHF part of the airwaves. Technically VHF is from 30MHz to 300MHz.
They were well placed at the out break of WWII in Europe to provide radios that would receive up
to 42MHz. Hallicrafters sold a LOT of receivers to the UK and Russia.
The Sx-25 top band goes from 15MHz to 42MHz.
Only specialize Hammarlund SP-200 went to 40HMz.
Hallicrafters receivers were used in planes and on top of radio masts, to find the "Radio Beams"
used by the Germans to guide aircraft to bomb British Cities. The newer "Beams" went as high as
67MHz and 75MHz, the Hallicrafters SX-36 went up to 250 MHz using "acorn" tubes.
So when one says the rig is deaf on band 4 they mean the performance from 20MHz to 30MHz is not
what you would expect from a post WWII rig using Miniature tubes.
