Thanks to every one who responded.
Here's what I've discovered. ARRL handbooks yielded the following:
1950 No S-76 shown.
1951 S-76 shown with no skirts. W4AWM reported an S-76 with no skirts,
stamped "RUN 3" inside, S/N D-104651. Several reported that the S-76 picture
in "Ostermans" does not show any skirts.
1952 The sensitivity, volume, selectivity, pitch and tone controls are
shown with skirts, numbered 0 - 9 (or 1 - 10?) except pitch is 5 - 0 - 5 and
selectivity has a single line functioning as a pointer. Judging by how close
they come to the dial housing they seem to be 1-1/2 inches in diameter.
1953 The sensitivity, volume, selectivity and tone controls are shown with
skirts (pitch has NO skirt). All have pointer lines. Again, judging by how
close they come to the dial housing they seem to be 1-1/2 inches in diameter.
1954 Ditto 1953.
1955 No S-76 shown.
I have two S-76's, both use just pointers on the sensitivity, volume,
selectivity and tone controls, on one the skirts are 1-3/8 inch diameter, the
other 1-1/2 inch diameter. Neither has the pitch control knob with the 1/8
inch hole so I still need one. Neither has a "run" number. (I'm considering
parting out the unit with 1-1/2 inck skirts.)
It would seem then that there were four variations;
#1. No skirts (Osterman's and 1951 ARRL Handbook)
#2. Numbered skirts including the pitch control (1952 ARRL Handbook)
#3. 1-3/8 inch pointer skirts, sensitivity, volume, selectivity and tone
controls only
#4. 1-1/2 inch pointer skirts, sensitivity, volume, selectivity and tone
controls only
