[Hallicrafters] Why Earth Ground The RX?

Many who listen to vintage receivers do not really understand the importance,
and benefits, of grounding that screw beside the one labeled 'antenna'. The
reception and noise reduction benefits are significant. The purpose is not
exclusively to prevent static charges in the atmosphere from damaging the
receiver. 	
	
I would appreciate one of the technically oriented explaining the reasons why
using an earth ground for reception is important and how it works. A
comprehensive, but still comprehensible, explaination will benefit many of the
list subscribers.
