Welll...There can't be two exact replacements unless they are identiacal.
As far as I know the HT33B never had a 220 volt input.
So, there is the choice of trying to remain faithful to the original design,
or be pratical.
Me? I'd go with the 220 volt line.
I've used one on a 110 volt line, but then again that shack had quad outlets
(2 duplex in one box) and the room had 4 110 volt circuits plus a 220.
I just finished upgrading the electrical service here to underground and
went from an old 60 Amp "split buss" breaker box to a 200 Amp service with a
100 Amp box right beside it to serve as a transfer switch for a 9000 watt
generator. Now there is a 100 foot extension cord that takes two men and a
boy to handle.<:-))
I've already run on 220 volt dedicated line in here, but I plan on two 220
volt circuits and four 110 volt circuits for just the one tiny room.
As far as remaining faithful to the design I'd like to find a couple of good
PL172s that I could afford. Too many of the things have set around for
years doing nothing but gaining a bit of gas. With the metal to glass seal
they really need to be fired up on occasion. Those old metal and glass
tubes are as bad as flying airplanes. If you use them it takes some life
out. If you don't use them they get gassy. If you fly a lot is costs a lot
for gas and maintenance. If you let the plane set, it costs just that much
more for maintenance. So, whether you fly a lot or a little the cost is
about the same.
Soooo... I may have to find a tetrode or pentode about the same size as the
PL172 and modify the circuitry. Actually if I weren't so busy, I'd like to
replace the plate transformer with one that has a 220 volt primary. Then
I'd tackle a whole bunch of other projects.
BTW What's the price on that transformer?
