[Hallicrafters] rebuilding caps

I chuck them in a lathe and turn a cut at the shoulder that is usually at
one end or the other. Remove bottom (or top). Get a LARGE lag screw, or
better yet one of those large hooks you screw into the garage wall to hang
heavy things on. The more threads the better, at least 1/4 inch in diameter.
Start a pilot hole in the center of the guts with a drill bit, go several
inches deep. Screw the lag or hook into the pilot hole DEEP. (Hook works
best as it acts as a handle) Heat case with a heat gun and start pulling
gently. Clean up "tar" mess with paint thinner or whatever solvent you find
works best.
There are several ways to salvage lugs depending on how cap is constructed.
Install new caps, wire correctly and slip parts back together again.
After you have done this once, you will know why I charge $20 plus
capacitors to rebuild one. Don't do too many, but people I have done them
for were all satisfied.
