All transformers like anything else, have a lifespan. Transformers
are no exception. Typically, a transformer can be expected to
operate without any detrimental effects with a + or - 10% voltage
excursion. This is a rule of thumb. Transformer as with most any other
electrical apparatus, failure modes are almost exclusively
caused by insulation failure.
The cause of insulation failure can come in many forms. Heat,
extraordinary long overloads (heat), wire abrasion (loose wires),
loss of insulation between laminations causing hot spots in the iron
core (heat)etc.
In addition, one has to remember, old equipment was
constructed of obsolete insulation materials. Modern or current
day materials are far superior in there electrical insulation
properties. Therefore, they should last much longer.
